What is the rite of Holy Orders?
In Holy Orders, a man is ordained to become a servant of God and is given a sacred authority from Christ through a bishop. There are three degrees in which a man is ordained. First there are bishops, who are symbolized by the mitre, the crozier, the ring, and his chair. Next there are priests, who are symbolized by the paten, and the chalice. Lastly, there are deacons, who are symbolized by the stole. A man is ordained by a diocesan bishop who will perform the laying of hands and the consecratory prayer.

Religious Life
Both of the two types of priests, parish and religious, were ordained to preach the Gospel, serve God's people, and administer the sacraments to the help the faithful reach heaven, but each have their own vows and promises. Parish priests promise to pray daily during the Liturgy of the Hours, obey the bishop, and live a celibate life. They usually live in a certain diocese and own possessions such as a car so they can live independently. On the other hand, religious priests make the vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity, also known as the evangelical counsels. They choose any religious community based on its lifestyle and mission in which they would follow. Communities can be either secluded or close together. As for religious priests themselves, they can either serve actively or contemplatively.
